I did let CRC know that I had suffered this scam since ordering from them with my order details etc. to help in any investigation that they may be doing.

To their credit, I just received a phone call from them to tell me that although they do not believe that the fault is inside CRC, they aren't ruling anything out and are investigating all possibilities.

They will keep their facebook page updated and intend to be upfront about any news that they find - good or bad.

Very good customer service from them, as ever.

Obviously there is only limited information floating around and probably a good dollop of secondhand hearsay but it looks as though the paypal transactions could be the problem? I have changed my paypal password this morning as an extra precaution.

Hi

My credit card was compromised just before xmas. One off I thought, bank refunded card canceled. However Ive just had my debit card canceled as well, bank spotted unusual transacations - £20 to o2 and one to a site in the USA, all small amounts. This set my paranoia going so I scanned my pc with some off-line anti-virus scanners - 5 in total - nothing found.

However I saw this thread today, and it makes sense. I had bought some stuff from CRC a few days before the first dodgy transaction this month. If CRC has been done over its pretty serious as they are a big name company.

I hope they come clean if they have.

I have always wondered, what is an unusual transaction and how do they spot them? I reckon I have a pretty diverse online purchasing profile with purchases for anything from clothes, books, cd's electronics & phone stuff, bike bits (obviously) from many varied suppliers, pet stuff, ebay stuff via paypal, diy bits and kitchen stuff! Tommorrow I might decide to buy an antique chimney pot as a gargen ornament or set of ski's for a holiday I haven't booked yet and I am confident the transaction would go through unnoticed. I even once paid 15k on my switch card towards a brand new Merc van I was buying, that was an unusual transaction and amazingly even that went through! In fact, unless I suddenly used my card to buy something in Venezuala within minutes of buying lunch in a pub in Banbury I don't think i could make an 'unusual transaction'.

I guess there is little they can do to proactively filter purchases other than time/location restrictions, they can only passively react to already identified threats. This must mean that if they start to receive complaints about bogus transactions to a certain supplier (like O2 as mentioned in this case) then they can be alert for customers who have no history of dealing with the identified retailer but who suddenly make a purchase there?

The PayPal problems are interesting, as the retailer shouldn't have access to PayPal details.

I'd guess the fraudsters have got access to all CRC's data, including login details. That would mean they could access the PayPal accounts of anyone who's used the same password for PayPal and CRC.

So ... make sure your PayPal password is unique

Make sure they all are.

And delete your paypal account - your details, vs your details being stored on a server somewhere (reversible too) and access with a single password.

It may be unconnected - although this thread is interesting! but I bought from CRC on 8th March. Phoned by my bank on the 8th March to report 3 suspicious transactions (that the bank thankfully cancelled).

A real pain!

Me too.

Bank intercepted dodgy transactions two days after I used my card at CRC (and Ribble). Card had not been used for weeks before then except in the ATM.

New card has now been issued, and thankfully it looks like I escaped any serious problems.

My card was also blocked last week and I had used my card details on CRC in February (they always send it to my home address when I use PayPal, unless I'm doing something stupid).

PayPal transactions shouldn't be affected as they never share card details with the merchant.

Unless the fraud was caused by hijacking the checkout pages and directing you to fake payment pages, which is apparently all the rage right now (Lush got hit badly by that).

Interesting I knew nothing all of about this, and the other day i went online to top up my O2 phone, everything went fine until I got to Visa secure and they refused the transaction. Maybe because of this, as I was ok for funds.

well title says it all!

checked my bank this morning to find that a payment of £187.02 had been sent to a company called monaive! (they sell some sort of posh fruit drink)

told a lad a work who said that on the MTB forums he goes on there was loads of people who'd had fraudulent payments taken after shopping on chain reaction cycles!

phoned my bank straight away who have now refunded me, thank god! i've also called chain reaction who said that it does seem a coincedence that there has been fraud from people who bought from them. they have guys over from england (they are in ireland) to look into it & will let me know the outcome.
the guy said it seems to be about 1% of orders over the last week of 2 that have had fraud. but there have not been any reports of fraud when paypal was used, so if you are going to buy then use paypal!

Me too, used Chain reaction Monday last, and got a call from my bank (Saturday). Someone had used my card to top up their mobile £15.
Don't know if this is related to Chain reaction. But its odd you have been a victim as well!

Me too 2 weeks ago. Mine was also for 2x top up for O2. I rarely shop online other than for bike stuff. I didnt want to post up here about it as I thought it was just a coincidence but it actually happened to me last year as well just after a purchase from CRC.

Now what to do as we both have the same fraud in the same timeframe after shopping at CRC !
