It's a bit more complicated than that...

Anyhows, I bored a few 4" holes through it yesterday. I was quite inventive, I taped a large clear plastic bag to the ceiling with the drill inside, then wearing my mask just in case, I formed the holes creating zero dust outwith the bag.
Crikey. Rather you than me. Would you have junked the drill if there had been asbestos?

Since you do have historical exposure to the stuff it's not unlikely that you'll come down in due course with asbestosis or its ugly big cousin, mesothelioma. While you're still well and compos mentis it might be worth making a record of your relevant employers and their insurers so that if the time comes you or your estate can make a claim quickly.

Fortunately these days it's relatively easy - ELTO (http://www.elto.org.uk/) exists to document this stuff. If there has been a claim on the policy in the last few years you will be able to find it, and there doesn't seem to be a need to have had a disease, just to have had exposure which might give rise to a disease to register and search.

Google "Asbestos Scam".
I did. Although it's obvious what you think the scam is, it's not obvious that it really exists in any meaningful sense. The biggest scam seems to be people claiming for asbestos-related disease when they don't have it.

There is so much work available in removing real asbestos that I can't see why a contractor would bother scamming people!

I have no idea if it's a scam or not, but purely as a conspiracy theory, it hits all the buttons.
it is the top floor flat with a flat roof above, and there is an area in the flat where the ceiling is about a foot lower than the ceilings in the other rooms, I was curious what was above there as I am in the process of planning what to do with the property. With the age of the construction asbestos has to be a big concern, they seemed obsessed with it in the 50s and 60s

Thankfully it is just plasterboard, a very thin board 8.5mm thick + 1.5 skim. but it is certainly paperbacked gypsum. in fact some of my photos show the word "gypsum" on the back of the board.
There is zero insulation between the ceiling and the roof. and sadly with wooden joists I have no idea how it can be insulated without re-roofing

The only thingI have found in the flat that almost certainly contains asbestos are the old night store heaters, they are too big and heavy to move as one, I will leave them until the property is gutted, presumably the contractors will know what to do with them.
Good to hear nothing was found.

As for insulating the ceiling, just put some brackets spanning the joists and cut in some kingspan.
