Central Heating - on yet?

Not on since Friday due to no gas, major gas leak but a sign of things to come ? Great messaging, worried that the electric supply would get overloaded instead cutting back on the use of electricity was the message along with giving everyone affected a free electric heater

The heating is all based on whether the rooms dip below a certain temp at certain times. They’ve kicked in occasionally but not for long. Usually when we have back door open and it hits the time that the controller has a higher temp set. Closing the door has meant the temp lifting 1 or 2c pretty quickly and heating going back off. During the day and overnight the temp is set to frost at 7C.

We have a Nest thermostat , supposed to leave it to work out the temps you need and when ! However I’m not very trusting . So it’s set to 19c at three set points during the day. Good thing though it does work out how long it needs to fire up the boiler, pre heat to get to temp. Fairly modern house , timber frame so it does get warm. Unfortunately it doesn’t hold the heat in as much, it’s big but it’s lacking the modern insulating materials used today.

Fitted a solar i boost to heat the water off the solar panels and so no need for the heating yet. Fire up a small wood burner next in the evening.

i cant see the point as 90 percent of the time someone's home for us so the thermostat is set at a similar temp

We also have a wood burner. I’d fit a solar water heater first over electric panels.

Nope, not on yet.

Mind you, started the AGA up mid September and that chucks out a lot of heat. We’re going to try and get through the winter without using central heating radiators.

Not been on here yet, though we are apparently getting a drop in temperature from Thursday this week...
I have a soft blanket/throw thingy that I use in the evening if it gets a bit chilly.

We've had snow on the tops and it's forecast for lower levels later this week so, yes, central heating is on.

I find standing across the road to hurl abuse at them is the safest bet!

This house isn't very well insulated. It has already been as low as 10 degrees in here this autumn.

What is worse is that there is a cellar under this room. If I leave the air bricks into it unblocked, freezing draughts get into the house. If I block them off, the cellar gets damp. I might try blocking the airbricks and running my dehumidifier down there, but that would probably need lots of power and need emptying several times a day.

Heck Colin, your place sounds a bit cold and draughty to say the least!Have you ever thought about a one bedroom pokey but cosy social housing flat near Accrington? I think there's one that might be coming available soon.

I looked into this quite a few years ago. There were a couple of independent studies, IIRC it was more efficient and economical to use Solar PV.

Well my Greek work colleague says it’s quite common over there to heat water using panels. Ok an ever so larger advantage for the bubble and squeaks I suppose. Just not sure solar panels are worth the outlay in cost without some way of storing power. I suppose I need to measure my standing power during the day when nobody is around. Anyway wood burner starts getting a proper workout now until March/April.

Over the years I have had both solar electric and solar hot water and I found most studies of little use as as they do not take into account your personal needs, your house style and the heating system. We went to the alternative Energy centre in Wales and they made us turn a corner. Stopping us looking at systems in isolation, instead finding what suits our overall needs best. We halved our oil use very quickly.
