I had one fitted after suffering the same issues as OP and it hasn't occured since.

It does sound like narrow wide chain ring is the best way to go but cheapest I can find for a 42T narrow wide with 10mm offset is over £50. If the £8 chain guide starts struggling with rough terrain I'll borrow my girlfriends bank card and get a new chain ring

I found an even cheaper solution to that problem... I used an old front mech from my junk box on my 1x6 knockabout bike. I set it to the right position by hand and screwed in the endstops to keep it there. No more dropped chains!

I looked long and hard at chain guides and even after all that the one I ordered didn't fit, I had my LBS fit a narrow wide chainring for around £50-80 but I can't remember the final price.

I got this one, but returned it: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07WGM6XRW?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
