Well, 5-8 speed derailleurs use 3/32" chain mostly. More speeds usually means thinner chain.

I thought it was only the external width that varies as the number of cogs increases? The OP is referring to the internal width between the plates.

I don't know, but that could explain why chain tools are universal.

I eventually bought one of these. Chain came off in less than two minutes, cheap but worked. ^_^

The one I've got works OK, although the prongs are too wide to fit inside 9+-speed chain, so I use a different tool for those.
My cheap one actually worked a few times, but the thread was sloppy and it was hard to align the pin, and the pin bent after a few uses to make it useless. I have had ones of this cheap design before that have lasted better, so I guess my latest was probably a cheap copy of a cheap design.

Anyway, I've just replaced it with a Park Tool CT-5, which is clearly a far superior tool.
