The “method” is what I use on my own bikes, ever since I read about it on cyclechat forum. However if I’m helping out a friend with their bike, I’ll often find the chain is really really cruddy. So much so that I’d have to use a LOT of expensive lube to get it all off. Usually it’s so worn & stretched as well that I just tell them to get a new chain, but occasionally a clean in solvent like white spirit is the only answer. Wouldn’t white spirit evaporate sufficiently overnight so as not to contaminate the new lube?

Hi Pete, the key thing about The Method is that it’s a maintenance programme. It assumes a clean chain at the start and regular attention. It can’t hope to process the accumulated gunge of an abused or neglected transmission. Sometimes white spirit really is the only solution.

To clean up a really gloopy chain, I would take it off, and put it in a plastic container with a small quantity of white spirit, and leave overnight. After refitting the chain, make sure it's thorougly dry before lubing.
Takeaway containers with lids are ideal. For normal maintenance, go Mickle.

For what it is worth my 500 km (winter/spring) and 1,000 km (summer/autumn) service routine is documented here. My chain life statistics is summarised here. My current choice of lube is Rock 'n Roll Gold. Based on my recorded experience I am happy with this approach but may consider trying Purple Extreme down the track.
