Hi. I'm just about to replace the chain on my Dawes Tanami 24 speed. I did pop into Halfords a few days ago. I was hoping for a bit of advice, but all I got was that the more expensive, the better. On asking 'Why?' though, the chap didn't really seen to know. After a bit of t'internet research, the 'Wippermann 808' is at the top of my list, as it seem a decent price (£15.99) and seems to be a decent chain for high mileage.

Which chain would you recommend? I do around 4k a year.

you will need a 3/32" size chain for 7/8 speed systems. Don't buy a 9 speed chain.

A lot of the extra cost involves weight loss - are you racing? More expensive chains tend to have a shorter life expectancy.

KMC make decent everyday chains that last ages - can usually be found for about £7 each.

Make sure you join it properly using the correct method (each brand uses different style joining links)

No racing (although I do regularly come across a chap on a racer who doesn't like been overtaken on my way home). My bike is just for commuting through Doncaster. I don't care about saving weight as my panniers are usuallly fully loaded anyway. I figure that the more weight, the better the exercise. I'm just looking for a hard wearing, long lasting, weather proof chain.

KMC X8 99. It's an 8-speed chain, but is very durable - i.e. doesn't stretch quickly. Very suitable for the type of mileage you're doing

About same price as that Wipperman you're looking at.

I've just bought a KMC 10 speed chain X10 93. I assume you can remove links on this using a normal chain tool?
