Chain Tool Question

Hi - got a chain tool as part of my christmas tools present. It says "for 8/9/10 speed" on the side of it. Does this mean it's unsuitable for single speed 1 1/8" chains? Why would this be - smaller pins?

If the chain sits in the tool it will work.
