Sheesh, just seen the 9-speed prices compared to my 10!
I think I might go down to 9-speed at some point. I only stuck with 10 because that's what was on it when I got it. Could I still use the same chainring with a 9-speed cassette/chain?

Yes.

Five years on from buying my Spa I'm still grateful for their suggestion to go 9 speed rather than 11.

The other really good suggestion they made was to specify good tyres.

Just going back to me unusually getting caught in drizzle on yesterday's ~90min ride for the latter ~50mins, just gone to put fresh dry lube on the ebike (stored inside flat) and there's patches of very light rust on the chain... I not seen rust on a bike chain of mine for over 10 years!

Is the chain old? Prior to today, when did you last apply chain lube?

Chain as supplied with ebike last April, until last Tuesday it hadn't gone out since mid November, if I didn't apply lube before yesterday it definitely got some before Wednesday's ride and I almost certainly applied lube before Tuesday's ride.

But the ebike has only seen MucOff dry ceramic lube so far, just like my ~9 year old road bike, while my ~6 year old hybrid (ex-commuter) gets MucOff wet... Because the ebike and road bike don't normally go out in wet weather.

Yes. A 9sp cassette will also fit on the freehub (but no need for the current 1mm spacer).
If the chain's not worn, your 10sp chain will be fine too as will the RD, unless it's a 4700.

Why is that? Have they stopped making 9-speed stuff?

8 and 9 speed are now at the bottom of the hierarchy on decent bikes, and are at the bottom of the price hierarchy too.

The roads I ride are undulating or hilly so I rarely settle into a steady cadence - the pace is always changing so close ratios serve little purpose for me.

Nice one, RD is a Tiagra, so that's good.
You all know a lot of stuff about bikes, a lot more than me, so thanks for sharing.

Cheers, with my cynical hat on, it sounds like "built-in obsolescence". 9 speed is perfectly good I bet.
