Chainset Upgrade Help

I have a Carrera Subway 2 which was bought from Halfords as part of the cycle to work scheme, this has a double chainset with 44 teeth on the larger ring and an outer chainguard. I want to upgrade/replace this to have more teeth as I am starting to outgrow the 44 teeth. Halfords are not alot of help at all.
I want at least 53 teeth on the outer ring.
The chainset that is fitted (Suntour SR) has a spacer type thing fitted to the back to bring the chainset away from the frame, does anyone know if i can just change the chainset quite easily.

bear in mind your front mech will need moving up to accomodate a larger chainring, new cable for front mech and set it up you need to identify the bottom bracket and get the appropriate chainset oh and you'd need a crank puller to get the old one off
