At 3.30 yesterday afternoon I parked up to visit friends in two shops in Accrington town centre. As I got out my car a police car pulled up, with the driver staring at me. He then put his siren and blue flashing lights on, flew round the bend/one way system and came flying at me at great speed, then parked right next to me asking me to not move! Heck sounds ominous I thought, so I did the 'Is everything OK officer', obviously it wasn't but it's the kind of thing one says when such a thing happens, wouldn't you say! Anyway, it turned out that someone had been spotted driving a white Fiat 500 eratically, approaching Accrington town centre. The plod wouldn't even let me take my dog to one of my friend's shops, saying I wasn't under arrest, but was being held while the Tactical Response Unit arrived! There I was standing there, making small talk with the three coppers in close vicinity, then this vehicle approached with its siren and flashing lights on! Then two female officers got out and asked if I'd been driving on blah blah street, which I had. One of them asked me to not eat my banana I had in my hand as it could, affect the outcome of a drugs smear test they were about to give me. As this was going on a young chap approached from a nearby barbers shop with a chair, kindly offering it to me to sit on, with the plod saying it wasn't needed as they were putting me in the back of the Tactical thingy car, which they then did. One of the female officers then told me to blow into a breathalyser, then the other one took an oral smear test, telling me it'd take 8 minutes for the result to show. Naturally, although I wasn't under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs I was still worried about the devices giving an incorrect result. While waiting for the oral drug test result, one of the officers asked me to get out the car and follow her, with a long tape measure in her hand. She then measured 22 yards, asking me to stand still and look at her car's number plate and tell me its registration number, which I successfully gave. OK, I had a quick glance at the registration as I got out the car, knowing what was coming, but I could still see it from the required 22 yards. Anyway, after about 10 minutes of worry they told me that both the alcohol and drugs tests had shown 100 percent negative and was free to go! While all this was happening quite a crowd had built up, with folk taking photos of the ongoing incident, hence the one below of me with my new youth 'fan club', who seemed to admire my 'coolness' during the slightly un-nerving incident. Today I have received a text message from one of my shopkeeper friends, saying that at just before I was stopped by the police a friendcof her's had seen a white Fiat 500, but not a soft top one like mine driving 'all over the road' then pulling over, with the driver slumped over the wheel! This to my friend and me suggests that the police thought my Fiat 500 was the one they thought was the other one, if you know what I mean!🤔
