Sorry, my mistake. I use Michelin tyres but Conti tubes, which do have lockrings.

A good reason to avoid Michelin tubes then!

I use them all the time as they are my prefered tube and have never had an issue.

Ah! I use Conti tyres, and used to use Conti tubes too, but changed to Michelin because of the unacceptable number of failures of the Conti ones at the join between the valve and the tube - and I was using the lockrings then, and no, they weren't overtightened! The other advantage of a smooth valve stem is that it is a lot easier to fit a push-on pump chuck - threads tend to grip and chew up the rubber washer in the chuck. Two good reasons to avoid Continental tubes then!
