I had the 'subscription not cancelled' thing with old broadband co... to be fair, I forgot, only left it a few days late, but they refused to refund, when for £23 it would have been really easy for them to say 'sure, no probs'. It isn't a national company, but based in north east. So I pretended to be very well connected in local business, and told them I'd be recommending to all my contacts not to touch them with a barge pole. Silly, but it made me feel good  for half an hour or so.

A lot of businesses leave their customer departure procedures rather vague - I'm sure this is deliberate in order to make some unsure folks stay put.

However you need to do two things when leaving

Contact the old company to get them to stop the DD and agree a date for the last DD and amount

AND

Contact your bank and stop any DD's for that company after the agreed date.

(Personally I cancel the DD immediately with the bank and then pay up the o/s balance when they start complaining.)

Talk Talk.....bringing back a few painful memories. Had broadband with Bulldog (great service) who got bought out by Pipex (ditto), who got bought out by TT t/a Tiscali....who managed to downgrade my 16mb connection to 8mb within a matter of days and when I complained failed to do anything about it, time and again, except giving me scripted email answers. Cancelled my account (no attempt to keep my business nor an apology), went to O2 (who were great in five years of service). Tiscali then tried to bill me for two months service despite the account having been closed and the phone line transferred back to BT (so I couldn't use any of their services even had I wanted to). Took months and complaints to first ISPA (service providers' association) and CISAS (independent adjudicator for telecoms disputes) to get them off my back.
