Can anyone suggest some cheap cleat cover s/protectors for Shimano SPD-SL cleats, or even a do it yourself option? I've bought some Shimano PD-R540 pedals with cleats for just over £20 and don't want to spend £12 plus on a couple of bits of rubber. Thanks in advance.

£7.66 at Rose Bikes, but shipping will cancel the saving unless you want anything else to bring the shipping cost down.

FWIW I don't walk far in mine so TBH I've never bothered with covers, but if you do you might be better looking at SPD's instead.

Or get some fake cleats like THESE to save a couple of quid. A couple of CC'ers are using them and although not perfect they seem to agree that they're worth the saving.

Personally I'd just buy the covers if that's what you need, or forget the fake cleats and get some genuine ones while they're on OFFER

Thanks a lot. Yep, those are the cleats I've got (and from Wiggle). Just seems crazy you can get the pedals with cleats for around £20 but a couple of bits of rubber aren't that much less. As the cleats are cheaper than the covers I think I'll just replace them when necessary.

I use SPD-SL cleats, and if you walk "anywhere" in them they will be buggered in no time. Just walking from the house to the shed twice a day causes massive wear.
I've found that using the covers easily doubles the lifespan of the cleats (and the covers don't seem to wear). Plus the covers make it considerably less slippy to walk in the shoes.

Given that the covers are £8 and the cleats alone ~ £15 they make sense to me.

I've had these covers for over a year. I've walked a fair distance with them. I reckon they have saved me from knackering 3 or 4 pairs of cleats. They are still going strong. I reckon it's a false economy to go without them.

They remind me of the rubber covers on a cars foot pedals , maybe a transit vans clutch pedal rubber will fit a cleat ^_^ You could even get one from a scrap yard to save more pennies :thanks:
