Hi folks,

Last request before I settle for a Carrera from Halfords. Any Road bikes out there, either ready fitted with full mudguards and rack or has mounts to take them for under £500?

Shimano Claris (or better) with 8/9 gears and a compact chainring (50/34).

I’ve looked at a few online, but can’t quite get what I want.

Many thanks

Adam

The triban 500/520 are usually good value as well (~£350 & £500)

If you're on a tight budget second hand is a good option so Biff's offer could be good if the right size, otherwise go for the Boardman which is good value and has discs for better all weather braking.

Thanks Biff great bike, wrong size :-)
What size do you need

A Ribble winter would suit you, often plenty on eBay or a genesis equilibrium (older models may need p clips for the rack but works perfectly)

I wouldn’t get a new carrera if you can get a better lightly used model

A chap I regularly meet out and about swears by his Btwin and to be fair it sees a lot of use and gives little trouble.

I couldn't tell you what model it is because for some reason, I assume to make it less attractive to thieves (and everyone else), he has wrapped most of it with a spiral of yellow insulting tape.

Thanks again guys. I was going for the BTwin Triban 540, but read somewhere that I’m too heavy for the Mavic Aksum 20 spoke wheels. I’m 6 foot and about 110kgs. My budget is now about £650 (£700 max) so will have another look around.

You'll be fine, just don't go bunny hopping on them. If you do start pinging spokes, you could always reokace with some handbuilts with more spokes. All factory built wheels pretty much have the same alleged limits (Fulcrums around 85 for example)
