I have had them caked in mud and bent on the MTB when I have lost the cap, I didn't run a forensic test to see how the damage occurred you will just have to believe me.

I do this to mine every week. Never had any issues with valves. I have ripped the odd rear mech off.

It was screwed tight it bent the threaded bit at the top and would not unscrew.

Aliens, probably....

Dustcaps are needed on Schrader valves to prevent grit entering and opening the plunger, causing a deflation.

Not saying it doesn't happen in other ways, but the only times I have damaged a presta valve it has happened when pumping the tyre up. Usually when it is a roadside fix!

They seem fine - I use them on my commuting and road bikes. I haven't weighed them but they don't feel any heavier, and the only punctures I've had are where glass or flint has penetrated the tyre casing.
