Osteopath is 1st choice  From experience :okay:

How did they differ from a sports physio?

How did they differ from a sports physio?
Private sports physio had me visit for 3 months with no progress  He took me onto his NHS list, nice of him but no use as not giving me the right info. Took a wee break and went to the physio student at the gym, vast improvement.
Then went to osteopath (Paul Lawrie) is a client
One visit and sorted, highly recommend.
Sports physio gives you loads of excercises and hard work but the osteopath just tweaks and moves you about a bit (not pleasant) then you're sorted :okay:

Interesting, thank you. An Osteopath told me to pack up cycling as it is bad for you, this was quite a few years ago. So you can understand why I questioned it.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
How did they differ from a sports physio?
Different training; not medical professionals. Osteopathy is complementary medicine; physiotherapy is mainstream, evidence-based medicine. "One tweak" will not permanently sort a chronic or acute problem, except by chance. Only hard, slow, careful work will - coupled with luck.

The physio treating my achilles problem is employed by the Harlequins. I'm not aware of any sports team employing an osteo or a chiropractor, though I'd be happy to see evidence.

If you want to see what the NHS says: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Osteopathy/Pages/Evidence.aspx vs http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Physiotherapy/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Osteopathy might work for persistent (not acute) back pain, but it uses the same techniques to get there as physiotherapy. And the less said about chiropractic the better, because chiropractors are notoriously litigious (look up Simon Singh).

You don't find osteopaths or chiropractors in Hospitals, and not available on the NHS as far as I know. That said, the OP will need to pay if wanting to see someone quickly. See if you can find one with a cycling interest

Have just spoken to a sports physio who specialises in equine horse and rider, she is also into triathlon and is competing in a sprint event tomorrow, she's going to try to fit me in before mid week. She comes recommended so am happy to give her a whirl!

I had a botched job op by a surgeon who recommended the afore mentioned physio.
The 2nd surgeon who fixed the botch recommended an osteopath.
The 2nd surgeon and osteopath are responsible for how I am now, not perfect but streets ahead of what I would have been if I'd settled for option 1. :okay:

That is great, I am glad I did not take the advice of the one I used as I raced for another 20 years and I am still cycling.

Personally speaking - a Chiro provided some great short term relief, but also provided some longer term exercises in a far more comprehensive manner than the Physio did. If I needed the quick fix that @Justinslow needed, without doubt I would go and see a decent Chiro. My only experience with an Osteopath was a good massage, but it did not help.

Well she's booked me in for tomorrow 12.30 at short notice which was rather nice of her seeing as I've got Ride London on Sunday.
I did 2x 20 mile rides last night with stretching Inbetween which was ok, I was riding very gently though, standing going up hill is a bit of no no which is how I think this all started. I did 5 hill repeats on a particularly steep one round here standing on the pedals just over a week ago and probably just over did it. Then a silly twist at work sent the muscles into spasm?
The pain/discomfort is certainly wearing off and hot baths and stretching are helping.

Good luck. Follow her advice about the ride. If you don't think you'll complete it, defer (you will have to pay again next year though)
