Its a bit like your crispy things, but packed down tighter in baking tins. Its harder when it comes out of the fridge.

I prefer them that way as well

when grandchildren were at mine, we invited a couple of french girls to play (all of them about 7-10 yrs old) we made crispy chocolate cakes. Parents of the french children said it was now a special in their house as they are never heard of them before !!

Trifle. Urgh. Vile stuff. As is jelly with ice cream. One or t'other, never together. And don't get me started on the "delights" of blancmange, semolina etc.

Believe it or not, I've always been a fan of cake. My mother got a lot wrong but you couldn't fault her chocolate cake with white icing. My belly's rumbling just thinking about it. Or maybe that's just my memory playing jokes as I'm pretty sure that was the only thing she ever made that wasn't burnt. Or was it, hence the lashings of icing?

We had it for school dinners in Brum, too. An interesting cutlery challenge. Spoons just didn't do it, and nobody would let a 12 year old use a jack hammer. Lovely, though, and always with pink custard for some reason.
