We had it for school dinners in Brum, too. An interesting cutlery challenge. Spoons just didn't do it, and nobody would let a 12 year old use a jack hammer. Lovely, though, and always with pink custard for some reason.

My mother got a lot wrong but you couldn't fault her chocolate cake with white icing. My belly's rumbling just thinking about it. Or maybe that's just my memory playing jokes as I'm pretty sure that was the only thing she ever made that wasn't burnt. Or was it, hence the lashings of icing?
