One of my bikes is 14 years and around 30,000 miles old. I haven't seen the chain or gears for years as they're covered in oil,WD40,synthetic lubricant tar, road grime etc. If i was to buy a decent product to get all the old stuff off would my chain look new again,or would it still look black and well used?

Although a new chain is my advice too.

If you want to clean it then get some decent degreaser and rub the entire chain with it. If you have WD40 in the house then squirt some on a clean rag hold it around the chain and then turn the pedals so that you feed the chain through the cloth. Do this over & over moving the rag to a clean bit until the rag remains clean. Once done get some decent chain oil on the chain.

It's had a few links replaced over the years, but if it aint broke why fix it?

if it ain't broke, why bother to ask the question in the first place?

It's not repairing/replacing advice i'm after,just cleaning advice.

Take the chain and cassette to a garage and ask to use their parts washer in exchange for a couple of pounds in their charity box. I am fortunate to have a friend with an engineering firm which has proven useful a few times.
