Clever Song Lyrics

Maybe a double meaning, just implying, or telling a good story

I nominate George Jones The Race Is On first

She's left him, & he's comparing it (& his rival) to a horse race
Particularly in the chorus...……….

The My Tears Are Holdin' Back
And Trying Not To Fall...……
.. Excellent

I feel tears wellin' up cold and deep inside
Like my heart's sprung a big break
And the stab of loneliness, sharp and painful
That I may never shake
Now you might say that I was taking it hard
Since you wrote me off with a call
But don't you wager that I'll hide the sorrow
When I may break right down and bawl

Now the race is on and here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches are going to the inside
My tears are holding back
They're trying not to fall
My heart's out of the running
True love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches
And the winner loses all

One day I had ventured in love, never once suspecting
What the final results would be
How I lived in fear of waking up each morning
And finding that you'd gone from me
There's aching and pain in my heart
For the day was the one that I hated to face
Somebody new came up to win her
And I came out in second place

Now the race is on and here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches are going to the inside
My tears are holding back
They're trying not to fall
My heart's out of the running
True love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches
And the winner loses all

I'll add the cover by
Brian Setzer & The Stray Cats

SEtzer produced the Cats first LP, & this track is from his 'Twangin' LP

Chicks again

On their first album, after they spoke out about Bush, & the Gulf War

Two of the verses are;

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don't mind sayin'
It's a sad, sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger

And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter sayin' that I better
Shut up and sing or my life will be over

I got right up between her run and her ribena.
Shouldn't it be;
And I got right up between her a rum and a ribena?

Brilliant lyrics, called alliteration isn't it?

Talking about clever lyrics " There ain't half been some clever bastards".

There's a snake coming out of the darkness
Parade from paradise
End the need for Eden
Chase the dreams of merchandise

There is tic and toc in atomic
Leaders make a deal
The cosmic is largely comic
A con they couldn't conceal

There is no safe seat at the feast
Take your best stab at the beast
The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

Raise the art to resistance
Danger dare to be grand
Pride reduced to humble pie
Diamonds down to sand

Take heart from earth and weather
The brightness of new birth
Take heart from the harvest
Shave the harvest from the earth

There is no safe seat at the feast
Take your best stab at the beast
The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

Reasoning is partly insane
Image just an eyeless game
The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

Miracles will have their claimers
More will bow to Rome
He and she are in the house
But there's only me at home

Rose is a rose of splendor
Posed to respond in the end
Lonely things like nights
I find, end finer with a friend

I hear in the rate of her heart
A tear in the heat of the art
The night turns thin
The saint turns to sin

There is no safe seat at the feast
Take your best stab at the beast
The night turns thin
The saint turns to sin

I’m a serous as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer.

Is possibly the dumbest lyric ever.

Possibly a close run thing between that and ABCs 'That was then but this is now' with this timeless gem...

"Can't complain, mustn't grumble
Help yourself to another piece of apple crumble" ffs!
