I agree, I think they will suit my riding, for not a great outlay. Im confused by this Yep but only clip on one side? This a pita!) they look double sided to me!
They look to me like they have a platform clipped on to one side, so they probably will be double sided - having the platforms is actually quite handy as you can use them as flat pedals for if you just want to ride to the shops and don't want to change shoes.

Yes. Shoes don’t come with cleats so as a newbie you might as well get SH56s

...also worth looking at are lace up, more trainer-like shoes, such as the Specialised Cadet - I have a pair of these, and they're really comfortable for walking around in, plus they just look like black trainers.

+1 for the Specialized Cadet trainer style shoes; I have used a blue pair of these for the last year for commuting and they are excellent. I sometimes forget I'm wearing cycling shoes and walk around in them at work. They are however slightly more flexible when on the bike. Horses for courses :laugh:
