I use SPD-SL, but most people will say use the standard SPD.
It all depends where your riding and how practical you want to be about walking around.

I've used crank brothers egg beaters and shimano spd pedals. the shimano are better. When I very first started I bought the cheapest paid of pedals i could find and some lidl shoes - about £30 all in. That persuaded me that clipless was best.

I noticed an article in Cycling Plus that Look have brought out some springless pedals for £302 a pair. I'm sure they'll be very nice

I use Look Keo Sprint - good large platform size to clip in easily - responsive for sprinting and slowing down.

A good bit of float on the pedals which is easy on the knees.
To solve the problem of walking in road shoes with cleats - I have Cleat covers.
