I like cloves but I'll readily admit they're not subtle. And they're pretty much inedible too so never leave them in a dish you're serving.
I leave them on top of my Tunisian Orange Cake where they are used to flavour the syrup, but it's fairly obvious they are decoration at that point.

The reason for the clove-studded oranges, apart from the smell, is that you bake them and then they are the basis of mulled wine. I love all kinds of spices, and there are some things that absolutely require cloves, especially bread sauce, quite a few different biscuits and lots of recipes that use oranges.
