C'mon, then, what do you think?

Yup! I know it was just a consultation, just thought, of all the problems with poor driving we see, and talk about on here, that there would be lot more pressing improvements that could potentially be made! More interaction with those outside, than gadgetry inside?

Well I heard it on radio 4 before I read the article on the BBC, they had Quentin Willson arguing discussing the suggestions with a rep from the Association of Driving instructors. At the suggestion for sat nav use and removal of the 3 point turn, Quentin said almost word for word the same as you did in the 1st post

However, the sat nav idea was 'to test the driver on their skill at completing a route without any intervention from the instructor / examiner'. I can see the idea behind it, but like you, I'm not sure it's a good idea. Quentin was more forceful in his other suggestions that learners show be shown and examined on driving in the dark, bad weather (difficult that one) and high speed routes. Not motorways obviously, but there's a lot of dual carriageways about which are very similar.

Here in France, they do have a very good idea. Unfortunately, I don't think it would transfer to the UK. After a learner has passed their test, they have to drive with a qualified driver for 1 year before driving on their own. This will allow them to drive anywhere and in any condition with someone beside them who has that experience.

It did cross my mind that a three part test would be an option

1. The Theory Test
2. Coursework - where the student is "signed off" as competent on some simple tasks (such as the three point turn, navigation?)
3. The actual test

This way the test can be more "complete"

However having seen some driving instructors - I would not trust them to teach never mind assess

Can't resist it, what's the expression? Those who can, do, those who can't , teach! Seriously though, I just find it scary to be taking any manoeuvre out of the test, especially one as basic as that. Living in a village, only accessible by narrow country lanes, it is scary to meet people who can't reverse either in a straight line or into junctions. I've even had situations where it's been quicker for me to reverse, with a trailer, than wait for the other vehicle to finish reversing into either hedge or bank.

Require all learner drivers to fit video recording equipment in their cars. This will even help them lower insurance costs. No test as such, just so sample six hours of driving randomly and judge it off that. A year after passing, so sample another random hour to see if they keep their license or return to provisional status. Require people who get done for driving offences to go through similar.

Tongue is slightly in cheek as I know it's not practical!
