Hi Newbie here,

I am thinking of attempting to go from Cleethorpes to Blackpool this summer.

any advice on the best route to take?

I have got into cycling in the last 2 years but would describe my ability as above beginner but somewhere aproaching intermediate. I realise i have a lot of preparation to do over the next 6 months or so, especially for hills ( i reallly dont like hills) and i expect somne serious climbs around the pennines.

regards
Ian

Hi from another newbie. If its easy to get to Bridlington there is a Sustrans route from there to Morecambe called " The way of the roses " It is on cycle paths and quiet lanes/roads but there are a few big climbs in the middle. From Morecambe its an easy ride on cycle paths and quiet roads to Blackpool via the Knott end to Fleetwood ferry.

Hi, I would ride the other way if I was you. Blackpool to Cleethorpes, as the wind would be in you favor( normaly). Try plotting a route on http://ridewithgps.com/ follow the B roads towards Colne and then towards Howarth, quite a bit of climbing but very enjoyable riding.

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
There are several;

The standard C2C - Whitehaven/Workington to Newcastle/Sunderland. Doing this one mid-April
The new in 2010 Way of the Roses - Morecambe to Bridlington. I've this planned mid-May.
Trans-Pennine Trail - Southport to Hornsea. Planned for mid-June
Hadrians Trail - just north of the C2C.

There's maps available for all of these.

thanks for the advice. I saw the Trans-Pennine trail route on Sustrans which looked interesting. But some of the route looked a bit 'off -road' and maybe not suitable for a road bike- i may be wrong. But the route looked pretty direct west to east to me i.e via Doncaster -Sheffield- Penistone-Manchester area.

The route i have seen is Cleethorpes-Goole-York- Harrogate- Skipton-Clitheroe-Blackpool. though looking at a map going 'up' to York then heading west appears less direct. I would like a mixture of A & B roads but whilst staying on the road to try to avoid really heavily used roads by vehicles.

The Knott end Ferry is running all year round you could cycle to Knott End jump on the ferry to Fleetwood 5 mins and then cycle from Fleetwood down the coast to Blackpool nicer scenery check out this post here http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/made-a-new-coast-to-coast-route.66246/#post-1235292 to give you some ideas

You are right about some of the route being 'off road' & the TPT contains far more rough stuff than any of the other routes. You could just use bits of each that get you from Cleethorpes to Blackpool :thumbsup: ie you could come over the humber bridge & pick up the TPT to york, WOTR from York to Skipton etc
