We are in the process of putting in a new kitchen at the moment and one of my plans was to replace my old nespresso machine with a new shiny one,

However inspired by this thread I took the plunge and bought a De Longhi bean to cup machine - wow what a difference.

Still experimenting and using supermarket bought beans but achieving great coffee so far.

Any recommendations for beans

I like strong black coffee and my lovely wife likes weak ( my opinion) lattes.
Happy Donkey. Italian blend perhaps, with the wick turned down for your wife (lattes will mask the strength anyway). Sumatra Java was where we ended up as Mrs BFB found the Italian too harsh.

Cheap as chips for the quality.

I went with the Tassimo as it was 50% off.....new model coming out.
I am very pleased with the results. I enjoy the Americano Grande and the Columbian. I can drink it black but prefer a small (partly frothed) milk with it.
I have gone from one cup a month to one a day.
I may even go for a bean to cup in time (my daughter has her eye on my Tassimo)
We've had a Tassimo in the office for a while, it's been very reliable and the coffee's fine. You have to watch out for limescale though.

We have a bean to cup machine at home (a DeLonghi one), and it's great. After a lot of faffing about buying expensive beans from posh shops, we've settled on Lavazza ones from the supermarket.
Do you know the approx cost per cup using beans.
The Tassimo works out 25p per mug when on offer.

@Jimidh Mort speaks wise words here.

Either Oro or Espresso beans from Lavazza make a tasty espresso in my bean to cup machine.

OTOH many, incl me, think them horribly over-roasted and overwhelmingly bitter - that's the great thing about personal opinion (and finding cheap, quality beans online helps, too - there's a lot of overpriced carp out there IMHO also )

I've been getting beans from Aldi lately. They're not the very best but at £2 for 200g, I'm not complaining.

I used to regularly buy beans from Monmouth (as I passed it on my way to work) and the quality was always very high - but so was the price. I think the most I ever paid was something like £13 for a 250g bag - but they were worth it.

Pods use plastic . Which makes it really bad for environment.

Buy a mokka pot or a percolator or a caffietere and ground coffee ( or beans n a grinder ) .

I've been looking at Espresso machines for a while now (never rush into things!) but just bought a Nespresso pod machine this weekend. I enjoy coffee fairly strong, wife like a weak flat white style. Cost £107 including an electric milk heater/frother and you get £75 of coffee pods from Nespresso (look to be around 30p ish each)
Well worth trying as a first step up from gold blend.
