Coffee prices

As long as I breathe, I attack.
There are still £5 coffee+cake deals in coastal Norfolk if you know where to go (some local cyclists publish maps or at least stop names), and some places around here are famous for "Chelsea-on-sea" prices. Mostly "rijo" coffee which isn't bad, but of course it doesn't support the local roasters.

There was one tourist-aimed pub in Thetford Forest that redid all its internal brickwork with smooth white render and hiked its prices up so drink+cake was over £10. That was about a decade ago and it's still boycotted by at least two cycling groups.

Now dont get me wrong i would rather pay at an independent small business but i avoid the costa nostra etc

Good evening,
It is simply a case that a lot of people who voted for higher and higher minimum wages, gloated over their domestic property prices rises which trickled over into business premises and said whatever the cost of the COVID lockdown was it is worth it

Did you ever visit the Cakestop forum on Bike Radar? This sort of stuff was the received wisdom in there.

Please feel free to explain why “I have a
£50,000 loan that I need to repay” won’t affect the price that I have to charge

Bye

Ian

£3.80 this morning for two large takeaway coffees, must plan better to take the thermal cups next time! Cake has been skipped at £4+

Hi Ian,
You will have to ask someone who was in favour of lockdowns and then indiscriminately hosing public money around as a response to the pandemic. I was in favour of neither.

Bye.

I've been spending some time in the UK lately and Costa Coffee is everywhere. I don't understand how or why. Their coffee is utterly abysmal. When I'm at university, I go for a 35 minute round walk just to grab a decent coffee that isn't from one of the two Costa Coffee stores on site. And the prices for that swill...

I think people go for what they know, I suspect a lot of consumers are drawn to big brands through name recognition and the (mistaken) belief that they are getting a quality product. I suspect consistency also comes into it, people don't like change in general and aren't willing to take a risk on something new like a small independent. There is also the mistaken belief that with a chain you are getting value for money, in spite of the fact that a flat white in Costa is more expensive than any independent I have ever been in.

In the office today, there are multiple cafes and coffee shops around but the kitchen is only a 10 sec walk, free coffee and bring your own milk. What's not to like lol.

Just the merest correction for both comedy value and to point out the truth about their insistence on over-roasting beans to the point of burning them - although I feel that I should be fair and say they do it utterly consistently!

I used to know a woman whose daughter worked for a similar nationwide chain
She said that she often went there but only if her daughter was the manager that day

Apparently when she was the manager she always got in early and gave the coffee machines a proper clean
and made sure they were cleaned again during the day

it made a huge difference - and she would know she was a fussy bitch (she admitted it herself!)

My frustration is with the flat white. When it first came over here it was short and strong. The coffee flavour was in charge just as it is supposed to be. Now, in many cafes it seems flat white is just another term for a latte. All milk, with a hint of coffee.

So, like many on here, I seldom bother anymore and keep coffee for the home. At work, I bought these drip filters that fit onto a cup, buy some coffee grounds, put a spoon or two in the filter and just pour over boiling water and keep topping up. Surprisingly satisfying brew and cheap as chips.

Back when I was in the job they opened a Costa Coffee at FHQ.

We quickly discovered it wasn't all that and was eye weteringly expensive, so we got our coffee elsewhere (free at the Mickey D drive thru) and Costalot were gone within a year.

A related and mildly amusing tale. McDonald's would give is free coffee as they liked having uniformed dibble wandering in and out the place. Fair enough. One morning two of the boys from firearms were at the drive thru and the lad at the window said to my mate Del, "excuse me officer, theres an armed robbery going on inside." Next thing you know hapless armed robber with a BB gun is staring down the barrels of two very real SIG P226's wielded by two very pissed off gun monkeys who were missing out on their coffee.

Perfect timing, and they went back later and got their coffee so a happy ending.

Have you seen the price of chips these days? 🤭

Probably worth investing in a permanent filter now you've found the method that works for you.
