I don't mean audience members or others who clap in the right places. Something that annoys me is when contestants on quiz programmes give an answer and then when it's revealed they are correct, they applaud themselves like a performing seal! The audience and fellow competitors are congratulating them, why do they need to clap themselves?

they don't want to be the only person not clapping... they'd feel left out.

There might be a slight element of that. For people not used to facing an audience, it can be quite hard to take total attention and applause without feeling awkward. Joining in the clapping gives them something to do, rather than just sit there.

Also, it's a celebration, just like footballers taking off to run round or dance after a goal. They feel pleased with themselves (and relieved) so they clap with happiness.

It irks me somewhat when people applaud the pilot when the plane lands.

But maybe it makes the pilot feel good, and I know which of you I'd consider more important in an aviation situation!;)

The other week, our work vehicle broke down, and I had to stay with it and wait for an engineer to come out, and liase with base about it all. All rather tedious and stressful. When I finally got back, just after lunchtime, everyone looked up when I came in, and applauded. They were just glad that I was back, and that the truck was fixed. It was a bit of a joke, but it felt rather nice to be so welcomed.

I saw Casablanca at the cinema few years ago and there was clapping at the end from the mainly 'older' audience - I thought it was rather nice.

Yes, I like the idea. It's a drawback of cinema that when the credits roll, you just think "Oh, that's it" and you're back out in the real world. With theatre, the applause sort of breaks the spell, provides punctuation between the performance and going home.

Try attending a Blackmore's Night gig. The audience clapped in time with most of the songs.

It was one of the most undewhelming gigs that I've been to. A rock god reduced to a fawning fool fronting some mediocre medieval music yet workshipped by an adoring audience. I felt guilty for persuading four of my school mates to come with me to the gig. We were all in agreement that it was a 5hite gig apart from the one who was besotted by Blackmore's wife.
