Guy down the road has a 53 plate Volvo V70 T5 (will please 3 bikesmcginters) ex old bill motor, 120k on the clock for £3,000 may have a look at that tomorrow.

Mr Pig, is there much difference in the different models of the Mazda 6? going to check prices on them now.

Guy I used to work with changed his car every 12 months.

He used to buy a big, reasonably old, high-milage car (think big merc, BMW 7 series, Jag etc) for 4 or 5 thousand quid. Run it for 12 months then sell it for about what he paid.

He never did massive mileage, so the fuel costs didn't matter. The depreciation had already hit, and as long as he was careful in picking a good old un his motoring was basically free.

Much is down to personal choice with a second hand car - but a few thoughts...

Some makes you see hacking around as fast as they can push it (BMW etc). No matter how well they were made they will be knackered when you get them.

Avoid cars that are the Driving School or Taxi favourites. Almost evey cab around here is a Scoda Octavia - they will find their way onto the second hand market but have you ever seen an advert for a car that was a taxi?

I had a classy bit of metal (C Class Merc estate) until I was credit crunched and now I am in a 10 year old Pug 406. Quite honestly the Pug does the job just as well and actually handles better. Not all French cars are bad, Pugs stand out as much more reliable (in Diesel form) and do stand up to the miles. Wifey had a 307 that was still going strong on 170k, we only traded it to get the same with airbag, abs and aircon.

I've got a 2001 Merc A-class and I love it.

not being sexist, but, did you know that one of the reasons the A class has got a normal handbrake and not a merc-style foot-operated parking brake is because the A-class is mainly aimed at women and they apparently don't understand traditional merc parking brakes. Just can't get their heads round them at all.
's true.

an ex old bill car will be very mechanically sound in terms of engine and suspension, etc. as it will have been serviced on the dot, but may have random holes drilled in the interior here and there in order to attach radios, extra mirrors, video cabling, etc.

Opinion is divided on a number of Volvo forums re this one. Whilst some subscribe to the above view others are of the opinion that plod cars are frequently thrashed to within an inch of their life, often are on the go 24/7 and in consequence have many different drivers.

I have no 'inside knowledge' to help me decide one way or another. I do know that the newer type FWD engines fitted to V70's and the like are rather more fragile than the older RWD lumps.

I've got a 2001 Merc A-class and I love it. It's the A170CDI long wheelbase one. The engine has has never let me down. Put it this way, I'd hate to get rid of it. Inside it's a Tardis. It's got loads of room in the front, in the back passenger footwell it's six inches longer than a standard A-class, so there's heaps of legroom for passesngers there, and the boot is large enough to take a weekly shop for hungry hoardes. As soon as MrWC & I bought it, we had a towbar fitted and it's the best thing we've done to a car as it means we carry bikes on a rock-solid towbar mounted carrier, one that has a tilt facility, so we can still access the boot of the car even with three bikes on the carrier. It's taken us as to Italy, France, Austria, Germany... with bikes on the back and a teenager in the back of the car for cycling holidays. He could literally stetch out and have room to spare. Plus it's been all over the UK with bikes & said teenager when he was cycling competitively. Inside, all the rear seats come out, if needed, or there's a split rear seat remove which bit you want. Inside with the rear seats out there is a big amount of space for transporting loads. It has the capacity of a people carrier without taking up loads of space. Mr WC has a newer A-class, the A190CDI, and it is nowhere near as spacious or as versitile as the older model. The newer model has no longwheelbase option, and the rear space is not as useful as in my older one, as the floor space is lessened by the shape of the floor (bloody great lump running down the middle of it). When it comes to vehicle change time, MrWC will change his and I'll keep mine. The only way I'm changing mine is if it is beyond repair, and it shows no sign of that. One thing I would say too, is that here in Norfolk, Merc dealerships are expensive and less than satisfactory in terms of their service departments. We use a smaller, non-dealership garage where we know the mechanic. Cheaper and more competent in work done.

I've got the LWB Petrol 160 version of this in the Avantgarde spec. Echo everything said about the space, but servicing is hefty as they are so difficult to work on, and the airflow sensor went wrong on mine (common fault) which cost £250 to replace earlier this year and I've just replaced the coil pack as well at another £50.

The LWBs are a fairly rare beast and should come at a premium for the additional versatility which they offer.

I have looked at these... yet there seems to be around 20 different specs names etc with no apparent noticable differences. Plus there are around 4 different shapes.

Dropping my car off this afternoon so any offers of sales need to be this weekend.

When I was looking at changing my car, I looked at the likes of the Citreon Berlingo etc. I was quite keen on the idea of a Berlingo. However in the end I went with a Ford Focus Estate and I'm really pleased with it. Lovely to drive, and you can put a bike in the back without taking the front wheel off etc. Funnily enough it used to belong to my next door neighbours sister, before the guy I got it off.

My colleague has a Skoda octavia, apparently it's not as big in the back as the Peugeot 306 estate they also have so they've bought a roof rack for the bikes when they use that one.

I quite fancy the idea of the new Mondeo estates, they look really nice....... Mr Plax is adamant he's getting a Ford Cougar next though.

Folks, reality check here, this is Wigsie and he's just moving on from being BMW man. The only logical choice is a 'Noddy' car, I know even this may be too much for him, but he can be monitored:evil:
