thinking of converting an alu framed bike to single speed (got most of the bits) but got a couple of questions:
  • can it only run single speed rather than fixed
  • even then do i need a chain tensioner
  • can the rear mech be used as a tensioner
should make a really nice ss bike which i'm hoping to sell to offset new commuter bike that replaces it…

Why not sell the original bike 'As Is' than butcher it to an SS bodge?

A White Industries ENO hub is designed for this. It's well made, if expensive. I ran one for a while on a Cannondale MTB frame.

I had some issues with slippage and loss of chain tension and eventually changed to a conventional setup, but other people seem to have no problem.
