Hi Record. Thanks for the review and as you can imagine I have already devoured it. That Ridgeback is a sweet looking bike particularly the Matt black one. I have just bought a Specialized Sirrus Comp so that is going to be my commuter (i'll update the link you helped me out on re Tricross). I am looking for a steel framed bike. Why? because from what I am reading, it's what you do if you want a proper touring bike. That and sell on value in the future if it ever came to it.

The Dawes website shows the Galaxy Cross as being a double butted 4130 frame. Link is to the 2014 model but I've double checked their archive section and the 2013 is the same spec frame - IE same spec tubing as the Galaxy Touring.
good research and clarification. Is it the same identical frame on both? i thought not from evans photo's.

Grump: Thanks for the spec on the frame differences. I will keep looking. I am going off the Cross now that the frame isn't butted.

vickster: I have racked up another bike on the credit card. I don't want anything else going on it.

I can't make any mistakes with the frame. I am hoping that this tourer will be with me for years so I have to get it right.
take a look at these

The Cross frame does look different to all of the rest of the range. I think the geometry must be specific to that model (probably because of the flat bars). They used to have geometry info on the website but I can't see it listed any more, so can't elaborate on that.

The only decent picture I can find is on an expired listing on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dawes-Galaxy-Cross-Touring-Bike-22-inch-Disc-Brakes-/300977995493

That is the 22 inch model and it looks more like a traditional Galaxy. The article that RecordAce has linked to above mentions something about a compact frame "but with its cute-but-practical chromoly compact frame," and the way they offer the size's i.e. 18 inch 20 inch 22 inch etc differs from the standard Galaxy. Evans on the weekend to scope it out.

You're right - with the larger frame it does look more like the rest of the range.

Really the best thing at this point would be to visit a Dawes dealer and see whether you like it "in the flesh", so to speak.

The cross weighs 34lb. Ouch.
That's notably lighter than mine.

I want to put trekking bars on the bike with thumb shifters and normal brake handles that you get on MTBs. I know changing the STI's on the first link entails a lots of work such as swapping FD/RD cranksets etc.

What is required to get the second link with bar end shifters and disc brakes setup on a trekking bar.

Paul sell handlebar mounts to use bar end shifters as thumb shifters (several versions available for different bar sizes).
St John St also sell a cheaper "own brand" version.
