I quite like the Japanese underground storage idea, I suppose it would/could work in a variety of ways/spaces utilising the same entrance portal. I also liked the ones that run up the sides of buildings and you pedalled the machine to bring your pod back to ground.

Security is a big concern even for a low value bike coz it's soul destroying to come back to an empty rack. I'd guess the heaps of old clunkers in the cities are a result of those fears. When passing through Reading station I'm always struck by the masses of bikes and how unredeemingly crap they all seem to be.

Seems like no place like an American University for the whole spectrum of bicycles. I see everything from box store bikes to very fine bikes parked outside Mrs. GAs building. Saw a 1970's Raleigh Sport today. Work where I am (great big corporation) is getting like that as well. Everything from BSOs to Schwinn Paramounts. Security folk have their eyes on them at work, as many ride to work. Probably 3 times as many commuters as when I started there 10 years ago.

the new tesco in gateshead has cycleracks all the way along the front of there new store and lots nearby!

That's a major change for Tesco's they normally seem to be able to find a dark corner to shove one 3 bike stand.

Its not so much bad pavement parking, you have to see it to believe it. It looks like a massive scrap yard. Its like trying to get a thousand cars into a carpark for a hundred cars. I bet many cyclists return to their bike at night and think "Sod that, Im not digging it out of there and walk home" I think it could well be the same in Holland.

Copenhagen could use a massive cycle storage depot in the centre of the City.

I know talking to friends last time I was in Amsterdam they said it wasn't uncommon to own multiple bikes (all of which are crap) and basically leave them chained up around the place for 'when they need it' rather than just riding from home and back. I guess it's a mix of them being vaguely worthless as a commodity and the times they come in to town and buy more than they can carry so catch a tram/train home, or are too drunk to find the bike at the end of the night and do similar (note, I didn't say too drunk to ride it, I'm not sure that exists in Amsterdam). They then ride a different bike in the next time.

I get all of them, Sill Dill, Sill Gräddill, Sill Lök, Sill Senap etc. There are about 8 types and all verymuch cheaper and just as good as the jars in delicatessens. I get my Rollmop and Bismarck Herring from Lidl. My local fish wholesaler does icelandic herring frozen fillets which are sold 5kg at a time so I am thinking of learning who to pull the skin off and pickle or souse them myself. I've even been looking at building a home smoker. I used to go to the Classic Boat Show in Enkhuizen in the Netherlands and there was always a guy there smoking herring. They were fantastic.
