The consultant surgeon and physio have both told me cycling was good for my knees,

Depends - a mate of mine is waiting for knee replacements - he was told they were worn out and his daily cycle commute that he did for 30 years probably accelerated the wear -

What exactly is “worn out”?

He didn't specify beyond worn out knees requiring replacement - he was gutted as he started to have issues just as he was nearing retirement and looking forward to lots of time for cycling. On the upside I did reassure him as I have 2 friends who have had replacements that have been very successful.

My wife's on the waiting list for a knee replacement, her other knee was replaced about 14 years ago and is still working well. Although we couldn't stretch to going private we did pay to consult the top local knee specialist. He was really helpful and stressed that my wife should continue cycling to maintain her fitness and the muscle / ligament tone around the joint. Turned out that he's a keen cyclist too.

Usually osteo/rheumatoid arthritis has caused all/most articular cartilage to wear away in at least two compartments, loss of joint space and range of motion, degenerate/torn meniscii, bone spurs, potentially with valgus/varus alignment, pain, swelling
