The consultant surgeon and physio have both told me cycling was good for my knees,

Depends - a mate of mine is waiting for knee replacements - he was told they were worn out and his daily cycle commute that he did for 30 years probably accelerated the wear -

What exactly is “worn out”?

He didn't specify beyond worn out knees requiring replacement - he was gutted as he started to have issues just as he was nearing retirement and looking forward to lots of time for cycling. On the upside I did reassure him as I have 2 friends who have had replacements that have been very successful.

My wife's on the waiting list for a knee replacement, her other knee was replaced about 14 years ago and is still working well. Although we couldn't stretch to going private we did pay to consult the top local knee specialist. He was really helpful and stressed that my wife should continue cycling to maintain her fitness and the muscle / ligament tone around the joint. Turned out that he's a keen cyclist too.

"Knees effected by osteoarthritic forms of arthritis are actually able to self-repair, where as hips do not, according to a new study."
Limited though, ankles supposedly self repairing much easier.

Also note, the risks for bone and cartilage with cortisone injections are far too high for none irregular use.

My knees are woeful when scanned via x ray. I won't say I get no trouble - but very little mainly if I do to much too soon.

My lumbar spine - which MRI and X ray show minimal arthritis gives me loads more grief - I've been screaming in pain at times and yeah I've considered things I shouldn't consider.

The prognosis for my back is that I should continue to load and exercise it. Only resting if the pain get too intense. I would have thought the same applies to knees. Although when I'm told cycling is good for the knees - I do wonder if they are referring to 20 minutes on the flat - rather than 3 hour rides with 14% hills !!!!

I'm on e bikes now. It keeps me out there - but I wouldn't rush to get one unless absolutely necessary - it's not quite the same as a featherweight cc arbon bike.

I know loads having knee injections. I always wondered though, when pro athletes used it to cheat by aiding recovery what were they using and where to inject it? Or did they use creams all over their muscles?
