Corus Dura Solar

I've just come across this bike computer which seems to have good ratings. It is now available in my local bike shop. Does anyone have any experience with this unit? https://coros.com/dura
I came across it on this thread: https://cycle.travel/forum/thread/7474 and checking it out the stats it comes out pretty good.
I need to replace my Wahoo Element which has died and looking at all the other options - Garmin, Wahoo, etc., the Corus is as good if not better and less expensive.
All I look for in a cycling computer is: size of screen, GPS routing, speed and distance travelled, I do not need any of the other trappings that usually come with these devices.

I was a beta tester on it and have had one since launch.

COROS themselves are a relatively young company and their products have come on a lot since I started using them nearly three years ago. Primarily producing running products they ventured into cycling ones with the DURA late last year.

The design is a bit Marmite with the solar panel taking up up a lot of the front panel but that gives it it’s strongest attributes. I rarely need to charge it and in never actually switches off unless you dive into the menu and deliberately do so. That means startup time and GPS capture is far faster than anything else I have owned. GPS accuracy is also very good.

One weak point at launch was its navigation but they have been working a lot on that and it is greatly improved.

Looks great, from a very quick glance at the coros website, with one big caveat. Google maps and navigation is wonderful on roads, but terrible for cycle paths/tracks.
Google maps can take me miles out of the way because it doesn't recognise a much shorter bike track of a few hundred yards.

Maybe the mapping can be replaced?

Within the COROS app you can create routes which then sync with their watches and bike computers. I have done pre defined runs on trails and cycle paths, using navigation, without issue. Not tried with it with the DURA as I don’t have a need, but it uses the same systems.

I know that is different to on the fly navigation though.

With your background as a Beta tester, for my needs, would you recommend this device?
I should add that I have just ordered it. In the US, there is an outdoor company: REI, a co-op where a membership - I have one - allows any item to be returned in any condition for one year, so I am not really at risk, but would like your opinion.

If I understand things correctly you’re needs appear to be quite simple, size of screen, GPS routing, speed and distance travelled. It’ll do all that for you.

In terms of routing are you riding predefined routes or starting from point A and having a device navigate you to point B? After having a horrendous experience, years ago , with a Garmin Edge 1000 having it navigate a route from Manchester to Southport, I gave up and plan my routes ahead of time.

When the DURA first came out turn alerts when navigating were pretty bad but it has improved loads in the past year. As I say I don’t get it to calculate for me so can’t comment on that.

I only ever use RWGPS to design routes before a ride then download - but I do occasionally look at CycleTravel to compare routes, I never need to map on the go. Thanks.

I have the Dura now but it is near impossible to set-up. The language button doesn't anchor the chosen language and once the Coros app is downloaded onto the phone there seems to be no way to sync that to the device. I've sent emails to Coros for help, so we'll see. in contrast, my Wahoo was a cinch to set-up and use. Buyer beware!

Whenever I have set up a COROS device I go into the app and select to add a new device. I then scan the QR displayed on the screen of the device and it connects automatically. It terms of syncing, if you add a WiFi connection to it then it will automatically sync when it comes into range of your network. Otherwise it automatically syncs when you open the app on your phone.

I’m aw from home at the moment or I’d have a look to try and understand your “language button doesn't anchor the chosen language“ problem might be.

Coros has just said they will send my issues with the language to the trouble shooting department - probably some 5 year old kid still wearing nappies.
I select English, press the button to anchor it, then search for the Coros Dura app on Google Play Store to import to the device - no idea how to do that, there does not appear to be anyway to accomplish that - then , come return to the computer to find the language shown to be used somewhere in papua new guinea. Very frustrating.

It’s the COROS app you are looking for not one called COROS DURA. The one app does all their devices.

The instructions are much showing a car to a person who has never driven a car and telling him: Take that car to such and such address, and then walking away; The trouble is;
1. The person is not given the keys to the car
2. The person does not know how to drive a car
3. The person has no idea how to get to the address.

Here are the Set-up instructions from the web site:

"Setting up your new COROS DURA requires a few quick steps:

• Download the COROS app from the iOS or Google Play store
• If your DURA is not already turned on, hold the Back button (smaller button) for 2-3 seconds or until DURA turns on

• Choose your preferred language by scrolling and pressing the dial
• Open the COROS app and choose the Profile Page (4th tab on the bottom), then select “Add New Device”
• Scan the QR code on your DURA to connect, or you can manually pair via Bluetooth if you prefer.

That’s more instructions than a lot of companies give nowadays. I assume you are pressing the Digital Crown to confirm the language?

Yes, but it doesn't anchor it, so when I return to the screen, it wants me to confirm again.
