Could this be the one of the most heartbreaking things ever?

Having read the article, my first thought wasn't to start having a moan about religion, and I say that as an atheist. I'll leave it there as this is café.

Completely agree speaking as a fellow atheist. I think it's a lovely story and must admit I think I must have had something in my eye when I heard it on the radio earlier!

Me being the slightly sceptical person that I am I'm wondering how genuine the note is...
would that be the American spelling of Mum which pricked your scepticism ?

Yes and that's very sad, but he's quite probably about to find out that he's been lied to about some pretty major aspects of life and death, which might upset him even more.
I just don't think it's OK to tell kids lies about this sort of thing.

So you think it's better to say to a little kid something like "Sorry, your Dad's dead. That's the end for him. There is no more Dad so we have to get on with our lives"

or..."Sorry, your Dad's dead. But you know what? He's watching you grow up and he's proud of you and loves you. He can't be with you any more, but he's there watching you"

He's a little kid FFS

You all know helium's a finite resource, right? It has very important analytical and diagnostic uses and is getting close to running out. They have just found a large deposit somewhere in America but it won't last forever...

Indeed. It's so scarce there has been recent talk of internationally banning its use for anything other than meteorology and cat scan machine thingies. No known method of manufacturing it or synthesizing it artificially, yet this litterbugs kid is wasting it with stunts like this. Absolute disgrace.

Radioactive decay or nuclear fusion are your only options. Annoying really as it's the second most abundant element in the universe and we happen to be orbiting a massive helium-4 generator but until we work out a way to mine the sun, we're a bit stuck.

Me too, there is something a bit off about the note, the list contains mainly things that boys would want, yet there are hearts drawn all over it, which is what a girl would do, also the use of the word "mom", not something that would be said in Britain, mum, mam etc yes, it just looks suspect to me.

300km a week through London on a road bike.
when we lost our daughter at 23 weeks our eldest wanted to send her a message for christmas. rather than screw the environment even more we posted a letter rather than a ballon.

but hey its only the environment innit. it aint important or anything.
Remember that we are talking about a kid here who misses his dead Dad. He's not evil you know. And I am sorry for your loss.

You're making assumptions that he's not evil.
