me and the bread knife moved into our shiny new home back in november...in fact the house was so shiny and new that the council hadn't even banded it at that time...now, i thought council tax was based not on the value/size/newness etc of your home but rather on your local amenities etc etc...how is it then that the thieving gits want a considerable chunk per month more for the new gaff which is only 1.5 miles from the old one and still within the same postal code and why oh why oh bloody why, is it necessary to pay my local town council as well the county frikin council from the frikin council tax? that's like having your cake and quaffing it whole, surely?!

rant over. it ended up here just cos it was on my mind...thanks for the space to share CC

It is monetary value of the property that bands it.

Martin Lewis was on about this on the money programme last week.
I always thought council tax was to do with the old rateable values of homes, but no. They just drive round and have a look at base it on whether you have a single or double garage, double glazing or single and if there's a conservatory.
It seems people living doors away from each other can pay different levels of council tax!
There is a thing on his website that tells you how to go about having your house re-banded -in your favour! Might be worth a look for you.

They base it on the rateable value of your home back in 1991.

Note sure what they do with new homes. I guess they try to find homes of a similar value for comparison purposes.

We are in Band E which in my Borough is for houses valued between £88,000 - £120,000 back in 1991. It still costs me £175 per month of my already taxed income!

Ours hasn't gone up for the last 2 years so wasn't looking forward to this year's bill its gone down though £4 a month form £124 to £120 so pretty chuffed with that tbh. Just hope it doesn't mean they now cant afford the tarmac to fill in all the pot holes in the area :cursing:

They were going to re-value all houses and make it a level playing field until the prices started dropping and perhaps more importantly someone realised that it was a political suicide note.
