Surely that should have been noticed when being serviced ? Or have they only just appeared ?
How much seat post is in the frame ?
Not good news either way if they are cracks ?

The frame and seatpost is one integrated jobbie. The "seatpost" runs all the way from the BB to the saddle. Look at the OP's photo, there's no seatpost clamp on there.

It is a paint crack.

If it was myself I have it checked by a CF frame specialist if you can find one, they do look from the photos it could be a paint problem , it would be in the interests of Trek to at least offer some form of answer you would have thought,

I don’t know if you have seen this but it’s worth a look at

One looks like a crack the other could be a scratch. In any case I can't see why you are angry with Trek as you bought the bike SECOND HAND. They have no liability to you. Were you trying to pull one over on Trek? I have several Trek bikes, road and hybrids and they have all been of top notch quality. IMHO their build quality is second to none. I think the lesson to learn from this is caveat emptor Buyer Beware.

No problem , I hope you can sort it out it way or another , there is a you tube vid showing how Trek carbon frames are made They are there if you search for them,
BTW , I lived near Brisbane some years ago , it’s got a nice city center, when the kids were younger we spent a lot of time at Southbank ,

Stop worrying, they are typical witness cracks forming where the frame is flexing under the very brittle thick paint.

I had the same on my 2006 Roubaix and I rode it for 5000 miles then sold it with a clear explanation and the buyer was happy.

If the frame was really cracking you would hear some alarming creaking sounds as the resin broke transferring load to carbon fibres. That frame is stronger than you could believe.

Trek won't comment because that would be an admission that we cyclists are road testing this new frame technology. Manufacturers are now using thinner paints.

+1. My LBS spotted something similar under the BB of my Viner, and said to keep an eye on it. That was several years ago. The only noise it was making yesterday (on an imperial century) was the usual hums and whirrs....

Thanks for everyone's input with this. Has been very helpful. I agree that Trek doesn't have liability, It doesn't change the fact that the frame failed in a short period of time. It was a great 1st bike for me to learn on. I won't ever buy another Trek as I looked after it very well. As said in original post, maybe the first owner did something but cracks didn't appear for 2 years?? Has been to 2 bike shops for visual inspection, both say very likely cracked. I bought a 2019 Giant TCR Advanced Pro 1 today. I'm going to strip components off Trek bike and buy a frame to suit my 13 yo son. Live and Learn

That frame is not cracked. The paint is cracked. Unless the bike shop manipulated the frame with the seatpost clamped in a solid clamp and produced loud noises, the frame is not cracked.
I understand that you've lost faith in it because of mixed advice. That's a pity though.
Once you have the frame stripped and built over, attempt to break and you'll see.
