Every potential cycle tourist should see this.
I've done it on a motorbike quite a few times. Even with enough acceleration to stay in front of all the traffic, every set of lights are a Grand Prix. Every road users from cyclists to lorries are jostling for position. It is easy to get drawn into it, and if you resist, you incur the wrath of the others.. Next time I'm down on the motorbike, unless going to the Ace Cafe on Hanger Lane, I'll be leaving the bike or car at my sister place in St Albans and whizzing in on the train. Let someone else stress about getting from A to B there.
The problem with people who live there and deal with it on a daily basis is that they forget how nice it is to just travel at a sensible pace, and treat the lights as an opportunity to chill out, look around you and catch you breath.
We don't have the lane width in the UK. That is in part to what I believe is a good part of the problem between cyclists and motor vehicle drivers. It is an eye opener when visiting the states, and also other Euro countries which make them wide enough that even a fast pass isn't a close one.
