hi - does anyone know how to get a elevation guide off a gpx file i have created on mapsource - i want to do a long ride in spring so i have done a few different routes in mapsource , saved them and now i would like to see which one has less total elevation in total but can't think of a way to do it . the routes are going through cornwall and are 300+miles so if i could get the hills down a bit it would be nice -- cheers

I just generally upload the gpx into www.bikehike.co.uk and look at the elevation data there, but that is because I use velomaps and don't have the contours installed.

Import it into ridewithgps? Then realise that ridewithgps is the superior route planning website for use with cycling gps unit's and never look back

thanks everybody - have gone with ridewithgps - its done the route a treat BUT in the elevation it has given me +22520 -22398 ft . i havent got a clue what it means - all i want is total elevation climbed - i am guessing it would be no more than 12000 ft - thats a total guess but thinking about 6000 through cornwall then the rest being easier - can anyone shine light on these figures http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1945512 thanks

The + figure is height gained (climbing) and the - figure is height lost (descending), so total climbing = 22520 ft. BTW, if you plot the route from scratch in ridewithgps, it will add turn by turn instructions that you will see in a pane down the left, these will display on the Garmin in a shorthand format to give clues on where to go satnav style.

IME, a typical flat 100 mile ride usually involves between 3 and 4 thousand ft elevation gain, all the small undulations add up, even if there are no proper climbs, so for your 300+ mile route you are looking at 9-12 thousand ft assuming it is flat, if it is not all flat, i.e. there will be some hilly sections you pass through (say a 50 mile section or 2, with 4 or 5 thousand ft climbing), the figure stated by ridewithgps doesn't look otherworldly IMO.

12,000ft over 300 miles is what I would call pancake flat, chances are in the UK you won't go 300 mile without hitting some hilly sections.

+22520 -22398 ft .simply means you gain 22,520ft and lose 22,398 ft during the +300 miles that the route is.

bike hike puts the climbs at similar but clearer figures.
Total Ascent: 21938 ft
Total Descent: 21817 ft

Bikeroutetoaster gives figures of
Ascent 17640 feet
Descent 17495 feet

guessing you are doing more climbing than you realised.

that does sound alot - done lejog couple of years ago and noted cornwall was hardest with about 8000 ft climbed then it got easier so i was going by that really - i know around home it flattens out so 8000 + 5000+ 3000 = 16000 - total guesswork but 22000 -- thats a whopper aint it  fully loaded and probably camping on dartmoor first night sometime in march ooh my poor cold achey legs
tried bikeroutetoaster and have to be honest - it wasn't a patch on ridewithgps - the free version i might add as i am a cheapskate i was really impressed with it thanks to everyone for their help

Biketoutetoaster always underestimates the amount of climbing. Looking at the profiles it generates I suspect it uses a "smoothing" algorithm that's on a few too many PEDs. OTH the odd one and two metre height gains and losses that the other sites pick up (and so will a barometric altimeter enabled GPS) you may not actually notice on the road.

agreed - my preference is for bikehike.co.uk...
