Contre jour, and a flower/fly combo with some lucky lighting.

That could be interesting.

There are plenty of things I don't like (or haven't yet learnt how to adjust) about the new camera, but the macro (tested) and waterproofness (not yet tested, but an advertised feature) are two positives. Might have to put on my sou'easter if I can see further than the end of my long nose.

Isn't the OM waterproof to 15 metres? If you get deeper than that your camera will be the least of your problems.

Yeah, something like that. I discovered that the Sony isn't waterproof when you slip in a Dartmoor stream with it in your pocket. That one was a deaded one and was replaced.

To be fair, I've used the OM lots this time when riding... I've got a case attached to the handlebars, so it's always ready. Obviously I'm going to miss anything that needs more than the OM's 4x zoom, but that gives me an incentive to do walks. And it'll preserve the Sony for much longer, not being used on all my bike rides.

Interestingly, I read a review mourning the lack of decent compacts between £300 and £1000, and even in 2025 they are saying that it's worth picking up the HX-60 second hand, despite being very long in the tooth, and somewhat prone to mechanical/electrical wear if treated as I treat them.

A sweaty rear jersey pocket would be a challenge for any non-water resistant compact, so the Sony does well if that’s how you carry it.

My old Pentax(s) take a beating at the beach. The camera itself is sealed but all my lenses aren’t, which leaves it more open to water ingress at the mount.
Last winter, my bag blew over whilst perched on a rock. Two lenses escaped and made a bid for freedom, rolling down the rock and ending up submerged in a rock pool. They certainly weren’t waterproof!

The smartphone market has decimated camera sales, so there's probably too much competition for the the camera companies to make many compacts. Strangely early digicams are all the rage at the mo.

If smartphones can match compacts then compacts no longer have a place, if you consider that most carry a phone which is rarely used a a phone. 🤔
Digicams being all the rage is a hipster (?) thing which will fade by the time mainstream had caught up. It’s a fad.

True enough. It might be an age thing, but I just don’t enjoy using a smartphone for photography even if the results are good.

They certainly can't do 30x optical zoom with excellent image stabilisation, as my Sony can. There's only so far you can go to overcome the physical/optical limitations of a smartphone, amazing though they are, especially considering their size.
