...free assistance and solicitor in making a claim if you have an accident
I was a member years ago, but they weren't any help to me tbh.
Last year when I got hit head-on, I phoned up a No Win No Fee solicitor specialising (they said) in bike claims, and they were brill. All done and settled within 6 months (driver settled out of court).

In todays society the insurance is well worth having. Pedestrians or drivers will sue you at the drop of a hat. Can't understand the criticism of a Sunday run. Whats wrong with doing a sociable 50miles with a couple of cafe stops. Cycling is supposed to be fun! My local group has A & B rides. The A lot tend to go hell for leather on pretty expensive machinery and regularly cover 100miles. The B riders usually do 60miles plus at a more leisurely pace. I decide which ride I want to do on how I feel on the day or what bike I'm on. I think the cycling world would be the poorer without the CTC. Never seen any of our lot in sandals.;)

For doing what?
If you're a sensible cyclist, any collision you're in isn't likely to be your fault anyway?

Errm, if you are a sensible motorist, any collision you are in isn't likely to be your fault!

Assuming that the legal system, solicitors and insurance companies are all 100% sensible, efficient and honest

But if it gets to a court of law it is not your decision who is at fault. Remember the guy who knocked the girl over who struck her head and died. She was stood in the road. He warned her of his approach but was still found guilty and was locked up for a long time if I remember correctly. I can remember he was castigated in the press for having an expensive bike and "racing around" [whatever that means] on it.
I'll take the insurance thanks.

Me too! Anyone who cycles regularly surely stands a fair chance of an encounter which may lead at least to the threat of a claim. Who needs it!

Though my personal 3rd party insurance is through the LVRC, our club has the CTC cover for those who organise group rides.

Branches vary: you wouldn't want to keep up with the Blackburn and District CTC, at least not up hills - they have several members who regularly place highly in Open Hill Climbs.

The magazine is pleasant enough, but it's for their campaigning role that I'm glad we pay club affiliation fees. There's no other national organisation which speaks up for non-competitive road cycling anywhere near as effectively as the CTC.

Long may they flourish.
