That's what I was thinking @Nigelnightmare - like on the really old raleigh front hubs where you have to get the hub the right way around so the un-locked cone wants to loosen rather than tighten.

Still, it's good to have everything properly fixed now. The bike took a pretty good thrashing around the trails earlier in the week and the hub is still fine :smile:

Did you put an extra bearing in the side that only had 8 in it? I'd check the spec diagram and put one in if it's designed to run 9 in each side, I would have thought that is the case.

@eswar I've been running the bike with just 8 bearings on one side for half a dozen or so rides on the local trails now and all seems to be working perfectly.

Although it is admittedly very lazy, I'll probably leave it as is until it next needs re-greasing after next winter. After all, if the bearings were caged rather than loose there'd be less in the hub and I wouldn't worry about that.
