By banning them from busy roads and by introducing Licences. Reaction to recent road deaths in NSW, Australia.
"NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay says he is "increasingly persuaded" that a licensing system needs to be introduced for cyclists on the state's roads to combat an alarming number of rider deaths.
In what is sure to spark debate among road users, Mr Gay also signalled that he was considering banning bicycles from certain roads in Sydney to ensure riders' safety."

If they got the licencing system to work would the same stand a better chance of being tried here? Is it another case of the cyclist been seen as the sole problem/cause of such deaths on the roads?

I'm sure some motorists would jump up and down in joy at the prospect. Australia of course have plain fag packets which we are now getting & compulsory helmet wearing and we all know how contentious that one is. So yes im sure some people will jump on the bandwagon of it works there why not here.

I would like to think that we wouldn't copy this, after all the compulsory helmet use hasn't worked other than to reduce the number of cyclists, and I would think this would reduce it further. Then taking into account the safety in numbers theory, motorists will be less likely to see cyclists in their every day driving, so less likely to be looking for them.

victim blaming in the auto über alles culture.

sense and facts are an inconvenient irrelevance.

the likely outcome is ghettoising cycling even more to the: f**k off we'll ride whatever you do to it: faction and to people driving their bikes to local beauty spots a couple of bank holidays a year. Which unfortunately won't seem too bad an option to a lot of politicians and road planners now being forced to think about accommodating people not in airbagged mini tanks with more than a splash of green paint

the easiest way to reduce cyclist casualties is to increase cycling. Helen Blackman makes the point that Hoys message is like saying to a bullied child it's their fault.

Why in God's name would cyclists being licensed stop motorists driving badly? It might bring deaths down, because the number of cyclists on the roads would decrease dramatically, which is probably what they're after.
Completely moronic imo.
Banning cyclists from busy roads is the part that he hopes might reduce cycling injuries/deaths.
