This is a bit of a rant from a newbie to be honest.

I was reading something the other day about how Hull is very cycle friendly with it's 80 something miles of cycle lanes/paths/tracks. I then looked at their map and was surprised at some of their "cycle friendly" routes, and what bothered be more is how Google use these when you do a route planner.

I don't know if all councils do the same, but apparently quiet roads are cycle friendly, even if they are: unlit, national speed limit, about 2 car width in total (i.e. a squeeze) with only a ditch on either side!

Then some of their other cycle lanes appear to be more mazes than lanes: bumps, pot holes and drain covers all to be avoided, and I don't mean one or two, but whole mazes of the things. Seems they can just put down a solid white lane and perhaps some green paint and call it friendly! Then there are the shared paths: leaves, twigs and rubbish as well as a general unevenness to them!

Sorry if this is bad news, but I'm afraid it's not just Hull...

There can be a measure of misinformation in articles relating to cycle friendly routes, particularly when the story is written by someone from the authority responsible for the said routes.;)

Luckily I know, so I adjust the Google route myself by dragging away from such roads. It's just quite ridiculous as anybody who doesn't know the area :stop:

You can edit the cycle-friendliness of roads using Google Map Maker. It can be a bit confusing to use, and sometimes takes a while for the changes to appear in navigation results, but it's worth doing.

Believe it or not.....
Just beyond where you can see, the track descends for about 200m. Trees on either side, they're that low that walking you have to duck. The floor you have a choice of what to ride on. There's a stream runs through the middle, which has washed all the stones clean, or at either side the banks collapse which give a thick mudbath.

This is on OS maps as part of the national cycle network....

I took a cycle path today off road, and I have never seen so much grit/salt in one place. It's a split path/cycle path, and the cycle path looked like it has had the city's entire quota of salt dumped on it (the pedestrian path was clear). I had to get off and walk the rest of the way as I felt my back wheel slipping in it all!
