I still prefer the book in hand for maintenance manuals, will look the two suggestions up. Cheers chaps

For older bikes, Richard's New Bicycle Book is well worth having to hand. Don't expect anything on electronic shifting or disc brakes in it and 9 speed was the absolute tops. Handy notes on dealing with dogs, though. This thread visits your question.

The Haynes cycle manual is also a good start for the mechanically challenged to ease themselves into doing complex stuff.
