they have cycle police?

yes.

alledgedly tasked with sorting out bike crime, although they have been known to do other police duties , as they should. some of em look decidedly wobbly on the bikes.

dunno what the bikes are but they look OK.

anybody know what the bikes are, unless that well known sunglasses maker has started doing bikes ;)

Most of the bike police are pretty damn good on their bikes - most of them are keen cyclists away from the job. And they spend a great deal of time busting bike thieves. And if you want to know who makes the bikes I will ask for you if you say please.

The PCSO around my way rides one made by a certain gun manufacturer...

If it's where I think it is there have been a number of very serious pedestrian accidents on the new bus lane. In response they have erected barriers along the pavement. I suspect the reason that cycling is prohibited is that there is no room for a bus to pass as the lane is narrow, with two lanes of occasionally fast traffic to the right and no escape onto the pavement.

Whilst I don't think that it's the best use of police time, personally I think that the ban on cyclists is reasonable in this instance.

The accidents with pedestrians involve buses.

I can see an argument that it's reasonable in the circumstances, but there does seem to be something basically wrong with the outcome that cyclists are banned because of actions by bus drivers and pedestrians ... perhaps they should have not put the bus lane in at all and put a nice wide bike lane in instead.

A good point, but after the accidents I to can appreciate the abundance of caution. There is also the argument that there is not enough room for both cyclists and busses to use the lane safely. Fast busses do not have room to overtake slower cyclists and fast cyclists do not have room to overtake slower busses or those picking up passengers at the stops along the route. I've no doubt that a patient, confident cyclist could use the lane safely. Many London cyclists are neither patient nor confident.

As for the bike lane, there are three west-east lanes, I'm sure one of them could be put to a better use.

Most are very good cyclists.

Do you think there is a training course they go on like the motorcyclists and pursuit drivers ?

the one i saw apprehending somebody virtually jumped off the bike to make the arrest. Was great to watch.

maybe because the bus can take more than one person through at a time. evebn cycling peleton styleeee you are never going to get the same amount of cyclists through in the same space a bus occupies.

whats the frequency of the buses one every 2-3 minutes . likely if its on multiple routes.

its not ideal for everybody but city centre transport solutions often aren't . If the diversion route is so dangerous why not dismount and walk along the pavement till you can remount safely out of the bus lane.

I know what i value more out of health or time

There are videos on YouTube of them training.

It is worth noting that the cycle task force in London is trained differently to the pcso cyclists

Do PCSO cyclists get training?

I passed a couple yesterday. Both wobbling, riding in the door zone, not checking behind when pulling out etc - much like how "yoof's on BSO's" ride.

I gave them a wide berth when passing.
And they don't reply when you say hello

Some people here will know some of the Bike Squad. Seven of them volunteered to escort the Martlets FNRttC from Sloane Square to Mitcham, where a couple stripped off their uniforms to reveal lycra underneath and continued to Brighton

Some time last year I was whooshing down Farringdon Road when I heard 'Simon!'. Thinking it might be a creditor, or, perhaps a cuckolded husband, I whooshed on. To the red light. Where a hand laid itself on my shoulder. Given that I was on a Colnago and dressed in about three ounzes of lycra, and he had the full kit on, I think that's pretty darn impressive.
