I've got a pair of Exustar SPD sandals (a bit older than the ones linked to above). I've never used them in Europe other than for the occasional exceptionally hot day commuting. But for riding in South Africa - perfect.

They're comfy to walk in and to ride in and will do for all purposes. They are kind of heavy, though. But if you're wearing them to ride in rather than carrying them, it doesn't really matter much.

I never wear them with socks.

My mate once stoked my tandem in flip flops. We only had to stop once to retrieve one from back up the road.
Definitely not recommend. We were only going for ride to a country pub.

That sounds like an emergency reason for wearing them and therefore perfectly acceptable, even with socks.

I use and love the Commuter III from Keen

However they were out of production until demand from users brought them back into the catalogue

Still available from some sources, depending on size, but will not really come back out until Spring
I have some of these. Had to buy them from the US. They are brilliant.
