Cycle shorts. How long (in miles) should they last?

On my ride to work yesterday I was behind a bloke who was long overdue some new shorts, I could see everything, and I mean everything

No matter how hard I tried to look and forget the image, I couldn`t......... Didn`t have the heart to ruin his day either by telling him!

Just bloody tell them, much kinder for ALL concerned. Luckily i don't wear lycra so the worst i get is a slightly faded patch from the saddle rub where the colour has gone slightly. Defo no transparency!

I've a pair of Humvees, used for several years of commuting, which I use to measure my sit bone width, based on the holes in the backside, professionally patched and repaired. I did wear lycra shorts under them, but it was handy having pockets and some extra protection in colder weather.

My cycling buddy had the same problem when I started riding with him. I soon told him and he bought new shorts.
